Repeat Scripts & Referrals
A face to face appointment is necessary for most prescriptions and all specialist referral letters, particularly when it is 3 months since your last GP review. This is to ensure optimal patient care, appropriate treatment, and to save you unnecessary medical costs if a routine specialist visit is not necessary. Also, medicare guidelines require a face-to-face appointment if you wish to obtain a medicare rebate.
For existing patients occasionally when an appointment is not required, a script may be posted to your pharmacist, or collected at reception. A non-rebatable fee of $25 for scripts is charged to cover your doctor’s administrative time in reviewing your records and writing the script. Your doctor may decide to waive this fee, if he or she briefly sees you on collection of the script. Where your medical condition requires review, you will be asked to book an appointment.
